Annual Renewal of Registration

CDHM Registration Year: January 15 – January 14

Registration Renewal Period: November 01 – January 07

Late Renewal Fees Applied: 12 am January 08

All practicing and non-practicing registrants must complete their registration renewal by the deadline of the registration period. Any submissions received after the renewal deadline are subject to a late fee. All registration renewals must be completed before the start of the next registration period.

Practicing Registration Renewal

To renew practicing registration in Manitoba, all practicing registrants must meet the following criteria outlined in the Manitoba Dental Hygienists Act  section 9  and the Dental Hygienists Regulations sections 9 and 19:

  • Liability Insurance Memorandum showing: Evidence of valid Liability Insurance in an amount of 1,000,000 maximum per claim and at least 3,000,000 aggregate.
  • CPR – BLS taken in the last 12 months from one of the CDHM Council approved CPR providers. Please click the link for more information on the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification requirement.
  • Criminal Record Check (CRC), including the Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) – Valid for 5 years.
  • Completed Continuing Competency (CC) requirements.
  • 600 practice hours over a consecutive three-year period. (400 hours if you graduated within 24 months). Please click the link for how to Calculate Practice Hours
  • Payment of practicing registration fee.

Non-Practicing Registration Renewal

To renew non- practicing registration in Manitoba, all non-practicing registrants must meet the following criteria outlined in the Manitoba Dental Hygienists Act  section 9  and the Dental Hygienists Regulations sections 9 and 21:

  • Payment of non-practicing registration fee.

Registration Transfers

There are two registration transfers that can be made throughout the year.

Transfer from Practicing to Non-Practicing

Registrants who are on the practicing register can apply to transfer to the non-practicing register at any point during the year. Practicing registrants who transfer to the non-practicing register outside of renewal period, do not need to pay a transfer fee.

While on the non-practicing register, registrants will:

  • Not practice dental hygiene in Manitoba.
  • Renew each year and pay the non-practicing fee.
  • Not complete the Continuing Competency (CC) requirements.
  • Not  maintain certifications or documents.

To transfer to the non-practicing register please contact the CDHM office.

Transfer from Non-Practicing to Practicing

Registrants who are on the non-practicing register can apply to transfer to the practicing register through their CDHM account. We recommend that all registrants who are intending to transfer to practicing send their request in at least two weeks before their planned return to work date.

Requirements to Transfer to Practicing

  • Liability Insurance Memorandum showing: Evidence of valid liability insurance in an amount of 1,000,000 maximum per claim and at least 3,000,000 aggregate.
  • CPR – BLS taken in the last 12 months from one of the CDHM Council approved CPR providers. Please click the link for more information on the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification requirement.
  • 600 practice hours over a consecutive three-year period. (400 hours if you graduated within 24 months).
    • If you were practicing in another jurisdiction you will need to submit a practice hour letter on the office letterhead documenting the hours you had worked during the registration period.
  • Criminal Record Check (CRC), including the Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) – Valid for 5 years.
  • 600 practice hours over a consecutive three-year period. (400 hours if you graduated within 24 months). Please click the link for how to Calculate Practice Hours
  • Complete online declaration stating competency to practice.
  • Pay the admin fee and transfer fee through your CDHM account.

*Note: Additional documentation may be requested by the Board of Assessors during the review process. For more information on transfer fees, please contact the CDHM Office.

Advanced Practice Rosters

Registered Dental Hygienists (RDHs) in Manitoba, who meet the requirements, may apply to one or more of the four Advanced Practice Rosters. A dental hygienist may not proceed with any Advanced Practice unless their name is on the roster as defined in the CDHM Regulation, Section 1 and Section 2 under ‘Included Practices’.

Skill Based Practice Rosters
Oral Anaesthetic

A dental hygienist may administer oral anaesthetic only if their name is listed on the oral anaesthetic roster. This roster is a list of registrants who are authorized to administer local anaesthetic.

Restorative

A dental hygienist may perform restorative procedures only if their name is listed on the restorative roster. This roster is a list of registrants who are authorized to administer restorative procedures.

*Note: Restorative procedures are always practiced in collaboration with a dentist.

Orthodontic

A dental hygienist may perform orthodontic procedures only if their name is listed on the orthodontic roster. This roster is a list of registrants who are authorized to administer orthodontic procedures.

Apply to the Skills-Based Advanced Practice Rosters
    1. 1. Open your online CDHM account, under ‘My Profile’ complete a profile update.
      2. Under ‘Advanced Practice’, select the appropriate roster.
      3. Upload your notarized certificate or request to have your official transcripts from your educational institution sent directly to the CDHM.
      4. Complete the Declaration and submit the application.

Note: Contact the College office regarding equivalency of Advanced Practice Courses. The Board of Assessors may request a copy of the course syllabus for evaluation Purposes.

All applications to the Advanced Practice Rosters are reviewed and approved by the Board of Assessors (BOA). Registrants will be permitted to practice these advanced skills once they are approved by the BOAs.

Extended Practice Roster

The extended practice roster is a list of registrants who have met the practice hour requirements described in section 3(2)(b) of the Dental Hygienist Regulations. Registrants on this roster do not require supervision by a dentist for the procedures of scaling, root planning, debridement, curettage, and oral anaesthesia.

Apply to the Extended Practice Roster
    • 1. Complete 3,000 hours of dental hygiene practice.
    • 2. Open your online CDHM account, under ‘My profile’ complete a profile update.
    • 3. Under ‘Advanced Practice’ select the ‘Extended Practice Roster’.
    • 4. Enter the total number of career practice hours.
    • 5. Complete the declaration at the bottom of the advanced practice section and submit your update for review.

All application to the extended practice roster are reviewed and approved by the Board of Assessors. Registrants will be allowed to practice unsupervised as described in the Dental Hygienists Act under section 2(2) and the Regulation under sections 3(2) to 3(4) once their request for the Extended Practice Roster has been approved.
